Historical Information

Economic History Services

Excellent site for British and American economic history data (such as real and adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) over time and comparative price purchasing series). Also serves as a starting point for learning more about the practice of economic history in the two countries.

Historical Census Browser

Fabulous site presents the results of a research project undertaken at the University of Virginia to provide online access to data from the U.S. Census from 1790 to 1960. Site shows the real power of the Internet to deliver information.

Historical Data For S&P 500 Stocks

Highly complex site offers stock performance data for download. Although very useful for those interested in the nuances of stock market history, its technical complexity may be too much for most.

Historical Weather Database

Washington Post site covers key weather stats (average and record temperatures, precipitation, wind, sun and cloud-cover averages) for approximately 2,000 leading cities worldwide. The extent of the data available for individual locations varies due to variations in collection agencies.

World Climate

Compilation of average weather statistics for more than 85,000 locations worldwide. Database is based on a 1996 model, but the site promises a newer version will very soon be live (as of September 2003), so the information may well become much more accurate.
